I was hired by a well known entertainment company here in Los Angeles to work a wedding in Aspen, Colorado. This means that on the 24th of July I will take a flight from LA to Aspen. While at the airport waiting on my flight I meet the 10 other guys that will be my fellow bandmates for this high end wedding.
Some of the guys I have worked with before and this will be the first time working with others. As we are waiting for our first flight to Denver, CO. there is an announcement from the gate agent that our flight is delayed because of mechanical problems with the plane. This problem turns into a cancellation, and now we are on standby for the next flight. I must tell you that the first flight was supposed to leave at 12:30PM and three flights and seven hours later we land in Denver. But, now we have missed the connection and the airline does not want to spring for hotel rooms for the night. We finally work out the hotel problem and we are all set to take the first flight at 6:00AM to Aspen.
We arrive at Aspen the next morning and get to the hotel. And the hotel gave our rooms away. So we are tired, mad and hungry with no hotel rooms and a 3:00PM sound check.. Can this trip get any worse I ask myself. At noon we finally get rooms. The soundcheck goes well, but we have a new unexpected member of the band. The entertainment company neglects to tell us that there will also be a "Frank Sinatra" singer from Las Vegas performing with us.. I am about to scream:-) Thank goodness the guy is a professional, and came with music for the band to play.. All of those years practicing reading music is going to pay off. The gig went over great, the client loved us and it was fun playing music that I don't get to play much.. This gig was worth it even with the problems getting to Aspen.
Peace, JV
