July 23rd 2005 .. part two

I don't know about you, but there are times when a day cannot get any better. Today was one of those days. It started with the van ride to the venue for soundcheck. Today we have a nice lady driving the van, and I can tell that we are all feeling extra silly. Soon the conversation takes on an adult nature with Bruce apologizing and trying to distance himself from the rest of us in a playful manner... our driver is not fazed by our hi-jinks. We arrive at a security gate and I am asked to let the guard know that we have a car following us, and to please let it in. I am trying to perform this task as shouts of "I'm gonna beat your a$$" is shouted from the back of the van. The guard just laughs with us as we drive off.

I wish all of you could hear some of our soundchecks. There are times when the soundcheck competes with the show and today was a great soundcheck.

After soundcheck, there is dinner and after dinner we sit around and find ways to pass the time. Today, Bruce tells the band a very funny story from his days with Sheena Easton on a tour of Bangkok. If you know Bruce, especially from the old days, then you know that it's hard to pass a basketball court without trying to get into the game... which brings us to the story.

Bruce and a couple of guys are walking around Bangkok when they see some guys playing basketball. These guys are vertically challenged, so to speak, and Bruce figures to get in the game and dominate. As he steps on the court, everyone turns to Bruce and at the same time starts yelling this word to him. "Dak, dak, dak!". Bruce is stunned. What the hell is this? What are they saying? Maybe this was not a good idea. I think I should leave, and just as he turns to go, one of the guys comes up to him with the basketball. The guys hands the ball to Bruce and says, "dak!"

"Oh, I get it", says Bruce. These guys want to see me "dunk", so Bruce goes over to the basketball and, as luck would have it, he notices that it is about 3 inches lower then it should be. "I think I can do this!", he says. And sure enough he dunks the ball. The players explode with admiration for Hornsby:-} ( I added that myself). We are all laughing our heads off in the dressing room at this story. But the story does not end here.

I have an idea.:-} I wait until Sonny leaves the room and I follow him. I grab Sonny and move him to an area where no one can hear my plan.

"Hey Sonny, after the second or third song tonight, let's chant, 'dak! dak! dak!'"
"Yes", he says, "just tell me when!" (this is why you have to watch your back at all times with this band).

The show starts and we are on tonight. Once again the band is hitting hard and fast. The right moment comes, we chant "Dak! Dak! Dak!" Bruce laughs and lets the audience in on our joke. For the rest of the night, both audience and band chant "Dak! Dak! Dak!" at various times. A beautiful thing for those in attendance.. And I hope you got a kick out of this story. It was fun for me. I can't wait to see what tomorrow brings.

See ya soon, JV:-}
