Show day in Redding, CA.
Tonight we are performing at a theatre that has gone thru a renovation. The place is beautiful and our driver tells us the history of the place. As we do the sound check, there seems to be problems. We are not happy with the sound of the place. Everything seems to be loud and boomy. After a couple of songs, Dagle our sound guy tells us to chill and that it will sound better when the place fills up (Oh! sure it will, we all think). But, there is a reason that I am not a sound man and Dagle is right. The sound of this room is completely different once there are butts in the seats.
Whew! we are so happy, now we can concentrate on having fun. Before the show, Bruce come up with an idea for the opening song. He is going to start with "Sunlight Moon", a great song that we as a band don't know. But during the song Bruce wants us to each make an appearance on stage, play a few notes and walk off. Okay we say, he has asked for worse...
Actually, today at soundcheck Bruce asked me if I would sing a verse to one of the songs. Now, Bruce is my boy and I am usually game for anything. The pink wig (which by the way, my girl totally hates). So we usually save the wig for shows that she attends.:-} All kinds of nick-names. But, to get in front of people and sing, I would rather sit on the beach in the middle of a sand crab war.:-} So the song begins, and one by one we walk up to our instruments play a few notes and walk off. When it was my turn, I sit on the stage in the American Indian position play a few notes and split... Bruce will not look our way for fear of busting up with laughter.
There were some fans at this show that heard about the "dak" night or were at the show from the night before. On one break a couple of them started chanting "dak" and we loved it. I think it was a great show although I don't think it was a good one for me personally. Sonny was in rare form and the audience had a good time. Tomorrow's a day off. Yeah, another one. I'm getting spoiled with this schedule.
Peace, JV:-}
