Chattanooga, TN
We are back! And what a way to start. Tonight we are in Chattanooga,TN. and it feels so good. Tonight's gig was as close to perfect as we can get. This was a great Bruce Hornsby audience. I think this the type of crowd that allows us to play whatever we want. A very musical audience. Bruce started the show with two solo pieces. When the band walked on stage, the audience started to applaud.
Please don't get me wrong. We always feel appreciated, but this felt extra good:-) Thanks you 'noogans.
A very funny moment early in the show. Bruce reads a request and decides that we will play it. "But wait", he says. "JV is going to be mad at me if we play this one". And now I am looking like the bad guy. Bruce you see, has picked a song that we have not played for two years, and he is wondering if I remember this one. The audience is showing more faith in me than I have. I hear a voice from the crowd, "You can do it JV", a woman shouts. "Uh oh!" I think. This is going to be a hard one.
Now keep in mind, when Bruce mentions the name of the song, everyone on my side of the stage groans with fear. But I am the one on the spot. I make up my mind that if I don't play another song right tonight, I will play this one. The song is from the Tin Cup soundtrack, "Nobody There But Me".
Bruce starts the song off, I am ready. Every hair on my head is standing on end ;-} It is time for me to come in. The song is coming to me as if we played yesterday. I have to stop myself from self congratulations until the song is over.
After we end the song Bruce shouts, "He did it!", and I take a bow. I think this went a long way towards getting us all loose. The rest of the night was cake.
Tonight also featured R.S. Hornsby sitting in on guitar. Bruce loves the way R.S. plays and tonight he sounded great. We tried a couple of different things on a few songs so that R.S. could play and he really came thru. One song in particular that stood out for me was Dreamland. It gave me chills and had the hair on my arms standing up. We extended the verse so that R.S. could solo and it was fantastic.
After we were all on the bus, we started talking about the show and all agreed that it was special. We are excited about coming back to Chattanooga. So thanks you 'Noogans:-) for showing us a good time.
It is 5:00 AM and I am going to the gym after I send this. Next the Biltmore.
See ya there,
Peace, JV:-}
