July 22 - San Diego, CA
Hello my friends,
Last night we played a beautiful venue in San Diego. Humphrey's By
The Bay. I think that I have described this place before. It's a
hotel courtyard right on the bay with a stage set up. When you are watching the sun set with a glass of wine (or a shot of Jack) it makes the whole concert experience feel so good.
Now, having said all of that. These types of venues attract a certain crowd (musician's call this crowd 'the wine and cheese set"). Now I'm not bagging on this. There is nothing wrong with coming to a concert and kicking back with a glass of wine and your favorite honey (sorry if this sounds sexist but, I don't know the equivalent name for a dude;-) Anyway, back to the night. There is nothing wrong with this crowd but, it makes my job harder. With crowds like this you don't know if they are getting into what you are doing or wishing you would stop what you are doing:-) I'm sure there were a few folks wishing we would stop.
But hey, we are the noisemakers. Defenders of the defenseless. The righters of wrongs:-) Yes! we fly our super-hero flag high and proud. THE MAKERS OF MUSIC DAMN-IT!!!!!!!!!!!! And last night by all that is holy! We made some music (I always wanted to write comic books).
There are nights when Bruce is adventurous, and there are nights when Bruce is silly......... And then there was last night. Ouch! Last night Bruce played songs that had us all on red alert. He started pulling things out of his hat and, the whole band was holding on for our lives. One of the reasons that this band is so much fun to play with is the adventures that Bruce takes us on each night. And, the audience for the most part loves taking those adventures with us. If an adventure is what you like, last night was your night. I don't know if a lot of people in the wine and cheese crowd wanted to take that adventure but, like the band we had no choice:-) Great Divide,
Barren Ground, What The Hell Happened To Me, The Tide Will Rise. These are all some of my favorite songs. They are also songs that can cause problems;-) You either sink or swim and, thank the greek gods (I'm stuck in the comic books) I swam more then I did the latter. Don't get me wrong. I had my moments. At one point I asked one of our crew guys to get me a drink. I meant it, he did and I needed it:-)
It took the Humphrey's crowd a while to get into the spirit but, when they did. Yeah!!!!! Once the "Too Cool For The Room" people split:-) The undercover, full moon party crowd came out in full. It was like watching an old horror movie, you know. The werewolf changing from man to beast. This crowd turned into a beast. And we all love the beast. There is beauty in the beast (sorry). Once they loosened up, we all had a good time. It was so hot and humid. I don't remember it being so humid. I was sweating like a two dollar hooker on 50 cent night at the Navy yard:-) It's just a joke okay! I don't want to get any angry letters from two dollar hookers ;-(
Okay, let me get serious...NOT. It was a good night and we had a great time. Thanks San Diego.. I had the bus drop me off at home before taking the band to San Diego yesterday so that I could pick up my little Mini Cooper S. I love driving that car. And since this is the last night of the first leg of the tour. I use this chance to drive from LA to San Diego. I had a great time. The Ipod was thumping with old school tunes. And the wind was blowing thru my hair, or at least between my ears:-) After the show, Sonny and I took off for the hotel. Our last show tonight is a private one about 40 miles north of San Diego. We had a ball. The weather was amazing and we were singing and acting the fool. The tunes were The Brothers Johnson, Michael Henderson, The Gap Band just to name a few. We were in old soul school. This is some of the music that we all heard growing up, and a perfect ending to a great night. So if you are on the road Saturday night in the LA area and happen to spot a dark grey Mini with my big head a-rocking, roll down the window and give me a shout:-) We will see you on the next leg. Hey Si! Get ready to party big boy:-)
Goodnight Aquaman, Captain America, Wonder Woman and Space Ghost. And a very special goodnight to Superdog:-) He's such a good puppy...............................
